BoP and MNF (they are very similar). I like those kinds of shots to
start a game. TAF is always fun as well

WOF is hard. Neat idea being two parts. RBION is surprisingly hard
as well, when you wouldn't think it would be. Super skill shots like
AFM are fun when you hit the gate or a lane.

Sames goes for the super on Spidey and FGY/ Shrek. Two of my
favorites. Wheel is right up there.

The slight advantage goes to Spidey and FGY because you can miss the
shot numerous times and still keep trying. Both give you all the sling
hits you want and Spidey will even award light lock without canceling
the skill shot or ballsaver. Light lock, drain, plunge again.

Agreed on WoF. I also like how they somehow made that scoop shot more
difficult than usual if you do manage to make the turn-around.. ;)

Also really like Fireball, 4 Million BC, Pinbot, Taxi. WCS94's coin
flip thing is pretty cool. Dredd is cool looping the large loop from
the plunge...especially if you can get a few, which is darn near
impossible since shopping mine...way too fast!

CV's is cool if you can manage a Ringmaster hit with it...I consider
that a super skillshot even if the game doesn't. Otherwise it's a bit
bland compared to the rest of the game.

WOF and Big Guns both are very hard to make.

At school we're reprogramming a Big Guns with a P-ROC and DMD and I
think it'll be nice to make the skillshot really make a big award, for
it's so hard. Maybe start an extra mode that can't be started
otherwise or something like that.

Have the tower lit for a lock select either shark or side ramp skill
shot. Let the ball pass by the shark flipper and hit the tower.

Another thing about baywatch... Hit each of the 3 normal skill shots
one time and you get a surprise on the DMD.

Perfect skill shot!

Tommy's is real good too.

Honestly, I'd rather have NO skill shot than yet another 'hit the lit

the lane without changing it like on BBB!

Second Taxi. The spinout cant be beat.

TZ i think is the WORST skill shot. Although i agree a Skill shot
should be Finesse based (just the right touch), it should also include
just the right amount on OOMPH - who doesnt like to pull that plunger?
TZ doesnt support that at all - any oomph and you get a short ball
travel down a hole, skill shot over. Very weak shot IMO.

agree 100%
skill shots with a soft touch are not satisfying, like TZ or WW.
Neither are skill shots based on precision yet allow you to retry if
you miss it short the first time.

Taxi and Police Force are the most satisfying as you can really slam
the ball into the game and there is an accompanying sound effect/music
to go with the shot as it builds before rolling over. These are also
the most obvious skill shots in any pin ever. Even a non-pinhead will
understand the shot by the second ball.

Pinbot/Jackbot would be the best ever except that the shot is almost
always out of alignment and is usually inconsistent on most machines.
Earthshaker is similar.

Whodunnit is my favorite finesse shot into the basement.

WOF and POTC are the 2 toughest I have ever seen.

TAF, FH, BG are kind of blah, better than shooting the flashing lane,
but other than Big Guns, once you get dialed in it's hard to miss it.

Pinbot/Jackbot has an excellent skill shot. I also like how TSPP has
the hurry up shot or you can go for the Kiwk-E Mart. SM is great also,
because to get the highest points out of it you have to make a flipper
shot in addition to a precise plunge. A few games do that, but SM does
it really well.

I know what you mean. Although I'd take the lame-O, uninspired, lane
change skill shot over nothing, I think designers could do a much
better job at making the skill shot something awesome. It's the FIRST
shot of the game and it's the FIRST shot of each ball. It should be
something cool.

In addition to that, take out the little lane dividers with the rubber
on them and put pop bumpers there with rubber at the top of the
playfield. There would be three lanes with a lit insert for the skill
shot but instead of a slow bounce on the lane dividers you are getting
a rapid fire pop bumper careening off a long straight rubber above the
three inline horizontal pop bumpers. Try lane changing that in time
after it bounces up off the pop and then down off the rubber toward
one of the three lanes.

Not to sidetrack the discussion, but Road Kings does that, The Y-ramp

the kickback to fire it into play whether it's lit or not.

Yeah, I don't understand why they do it that way. My guess is to get
you to shoot it up top, which then sends it into the bumpers while the
ball saver expires, then it exits the bumpers and has a chance to
drain SDTM.

It would be so easy to program a much better shot and still have it be
totally obvious to newbs and more interesting to good players.

On Avatar, start the value at 1M. First lane change drops it to 500k,
then each lane change after that subtracts 50k, down to maybe 100k min
value.

#1. The 4 TAXI lights are a moving target, one target is lit and
which one is lit is automatically alternating between the four.
#2. However if you hit a flipper button before shooting the ball you
can now pick which shot you want to hit. The light is no longer a

I like Cyclone.

While we are on the subject of skill shots: I have always thought
about any game could use improvement in the skill shot department.

I think a skill shot should be a 1 attempt deal. What I mean by
that is that on some skill shots you can undershoot them and the ball
returns to the shooter lane switch with no penalty. If the shooter
switch is engaged a second time (by the ball rolling back to it) you
should miss out on the skill shot.

Another thing I would change on the games that have the "hit the lit
rollover lane" shots is to make a random lane lit. If you hit it
without changing lanes you get the "Super Skill Shot"....if you have
to change the lanes you just get the regular "Skill Shot".

I was also wondering...do any games have skill shot combos? For
example a good one for Spiderman would be: under plunge the ball and
use the upper flipper to hit the Venom ramp (this is SM's normal super
skill shot) but then it would get returned to the left flipper for a
right ramp shot, then to the right flipper for a left ramp shot. You
could even keep the right, left ramp hits going for added bonuses. So
do any games have long elaborate skill shots?

the Hole-in-1 shot?

Heat Wave - hitting all the rollovers on the plunge sends the
thermometer up one notch. Hitting them all is a bitch tho and
requires a playfield without a groove worn at the top.

So
do any games have long elaborate skill shots?
elvis has a bonus if you don't change the lane - elvis has a few
different skill shots also - thanks ed

Big Guns has the best skill shot, IMO, because it is so satisfying when
you actually get it.

Whats your favorite skill shot? I really like TZ's but like all the
others I've tried, after a few times its easy. BSD's is a pretty neat
idea also.

Banzai Run is real unique. The balls travel has to decay just enough
to make a direct score, but often ricochets off of a lane post and can
make a consolation score.

I wish I could say that I have played all these games mentioned, but
unfortunately I haven't. So, I have no idea the details of each skill
shot. In addition to naming your choice of game could you also please
describe the skill shot for me and anyone else who may not have played
the particular game.

My favorite is when you press the plunger, launching the ball straight
up the shooter lane and into the orbit, while holding the left flipper
button, allowing the ball to loop around past the diverter at which
point the player has to let the left flipper drop and then flip it
again to shoot the ramp that is lit to score the skill shot. I'm not
sure where the diverter was but I'm guessing at around 11 o clock area
on the game. Imagine if the diverter was at 9o clock..that would
increase the difficulty even more because there would be less time
between passing the diverter and the ball reaching the flipper. It
would be better if the game was spring plunger instead of button
because it would take a balance of skill to plunge hard enough to pass
the diverter, but not so hard that it increases the speed and
difficulty to make the next shot from the flipper. Flip too softly
and the ball doesn't reach diverter. There could also be a pentalty
if the player chooses skill by holding the left flipper, and then
plunges too weak so the ball doesn't go through diverter. Alas, those
are just ideas. Anyway, I'm not sure what game it was but it could
have been MM and the Damsel ramp.

I love the Jurassic Park skill shot. In my opinion, the only truly
good video mode integration, and it makes perfect sense to use it like
that.

Pinbot, Whirlwind, Mr and Ms. Pac-Man, and Tommy all come to mind as
being other games that have tough but really fun skill shots.
Toughest to hit is most definitely Mr and Ms. Pac-Man, most satisfying
though I think is Whirlwind.

I always though Bally/Midway X's & O's was pretty fun.

Medusa's is great! Good luck getting all those roll overs lit!

Wof, as has been mentioned a number of times....but, there's one more part to it. When you get the plunger skill shot it starts the toss-up puzzle. Instead of hitting toss-up, hit the left ramp, and then backhand the toss-up. It is doubled! Yes, it will be counting down while you hit the ramp, but it is still more than it would be if you hit it directly!
