I need help with a 1978 Midway Rotation VIII pinball machine. When I
plug it in all that happens is the playfield lights come on and that
is it. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? Any and all
help will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Josh

Josh:

If yours is like most, the game ROMs are on a funky
daughter card arrangement, which is also in a spot that
can get corroded should the batteries start leaking.

So after checking for PCB corrosion, look at the daughter
card connections. You should see an attract mode insert
light show on power up, I believe.

Josh,
Sorry to burst your bubble but 99.9% of the Rotation VIII's I have
found over the years did not and do not work. And I have not found
anyone who really knows how to work on them or troubleshoot their
inherent problems. I hope you get yours running. It's all up hill
from here.

I remember a half days training on them at the Bally Midway week long
service school I attended in Schiller park (HoJo along the Tri-State
Tollway at Irving Park Road) right after the "Blizzard of '79". During
a demo, we got to witness the old "Thunk" ball drop to the cabinet
bottom.

I probably still have the service manual somewhere.

Any chance you can send the service manual in pdf to me?
I would love to have a copy to help out a friend who has one too.
He seems to have problems getting the playfield to turn.
Otherwise his is working now.

You'll have to give me some time. I still owe someone else photos of
the lunar module controller for a Bally Space Flight. This was over
two months ago. I've yet to begin the big dig for it. Along with it is
where the Rotation VIII manual probably lies. Plus, the only decent
scanner to do a book is at work and I'm headed out of town Monday
morning!

I'll give you all the time in the world, but I hate to see this go the way
of the Dodo and forget about it.
Please remeber the request and post the file to the www.ipdb.org too.

fist thing to do is check the power connecter on the CPU. its the
small one on the bottom right. reflow solder on all the pins on it and
all the other connections. that got mine to start up, sadly it didnt
stay running long.

Josh...this maybe obvious...but if you do not have the ball in the slot the machine will not function. There are also alot of tests you can run to determine the problem. (See the inside panel with the key pad) I have had a Rotation 8 since it was brand new..it can develop problems alot. In fact when this machine was manufactured...it was not popular because of all the repair needed to keep it running at an establishment.

Rotation 8 is not dead, I hope to be able to do a replacement MPU board
relatively soon (year or less). My PCB designer has a real job (and
family) and not much time to devote to this sort of thing...
