Discussion:
Harvard Standard Metal Typer info?

I just came across a relic from my childhood and am working on restoring it. It's a Standard Metal Typer (as seen here: http://www.pinrepair.com/arcade/mettype.htm )

Are there any forums where enthusiasts discuss these types of machines? I saw there were some posts awhile back about these units. I'm wondering where I might be able to find more resources?

There's one good Youtube video around and a very shallow PDF manual that I've found but not much beyond that.

The machine I have is in good, complete condition, but it's been sitting for decades and appears to be seized up. The problem I'm running into is that it looks like much of the inner workings were not actually made to be disassembled... for example, there appears to be no easy way to remove the coin storage tube assembly to clean inside and underneath without using a pin/punch to remove what appears to be some sort of lock pin -- I thought it might be threaded but I don't think it is - and there appears to be more of those types of things in the machine. Anybody have any advice on how to deal with this? I'm apprehensive about forcing out any pins not knowing how I might re-assemble the thing (could they be tapped and have a set screw inserted?) Anybody disassembled one of these before?

I have a couple of those that we keep running. Mostly I get parts from

So is it true if I want to clean this game after it's been sitting awhile I will have to punch out some of these set pins? Are they threaded by chance? (They don't appear to be)

The square metal block on the underside won't slide - i can't get inside the assembly to clean it without removing the coin storage unit, but it appears to be staked into place permanently.

I've never had to dismantle one of these machines, however regarding
pins, they are likely tapered and easy to recognize as one end is larger
than the other. If not tapered then likely knurled in the middle, so tap
out carefully. Use a nail set if the head of the pin is concave,
otherwise you run the risk of flattening it and making it all the harder
to extract.

Try contacting the folks at metal-typer.com, perhaps they can advise.
Years ago when I first got my machines I recall that the owner there was
helpful to me getting parts and getting the machines to operate with a
few words of advice when I described the problem - perhaps fifteen years
or so ago. Still, worth a phone call!

I carefully looked over the machine and it was a punch pin. I was able to punch it out and preserve it and got most of the machine apart. It really is a lovely design. I think I've got it almost working. I'm going to sand blast a few parts and try to put it back together. Thanks for the info!

I haven't one for sale at the moment, but that could change. Send me an
email with an offer and I will consider it!

I was just reading through this thread And have taken a sudden interest in the Metal Typer machines after discovering one at a local historical museum and becoming enamored with it.

There's a couple unit currently for sale on ebay, but it seems when they've come up in the past few years they were significantly less than the current offerings.

Can anybody share a general price range of what serviceable machines go for in private sales and whether there are any available?

While I know a reasonable amount about the Metal Typer mechanics, I do
not know what they sell for these days. I have two machines that I
bought many years ago, neither of which is for sale...

Why not ask Crow River? They sell parts and machines - at least you
would know the game is in good condition if you got it from them.

Tokens are a pain at the moment...it appears that the company that made
them is no longer producing them.

Does anyone know how much they weigh. I need to know the weight of the top part and the weight of the heavy metal bottom part. Also do you know the height of pieces when
separated. Thank you so much for any help.

Are you talking about the Metal Typer machine as separate from the Metal
Typer Stand? There are a number of possible stands. One stand/base is
metal and the others are wood.

I may have a flyer at my shop with that info. I've emailed you the
service manual for these machines in the meantime.
