Hyperball alternate ROMs found!

I was going through my NOS Hyperball stock and found three different
sets of ROMs that are all 509s. (And an 509-L4 version, but who cares?
It's the same as the L4 on IPDB.)

One set has white factory labels - 509-7.R2, 509-8.R2 and 509-9.R2

One set is labelled HB D000 2-8, HB E000 2-8, and HB F000 2-8..

The last set is labelled HB 7 R3, and HB 9 R3 - I can't find HB 8.

These are consistent with similar numbered parts, however they are all
different (checksums) from the four sets on IPDB - L2, L4, L5, and L6
and the other sets.

Note that IPDB L5 and L6 just have IC 20 variations, but same checksums
as L2 and L4.

Checksums of the three IPDB versions are all IC14=A8D2, IC17=EB8D, and
IC20=6613, and the code is different between the versions.

Anyone have the following checksums on their games?

White Labels 509-7/8/9.R2
IC14=C377, IC17=EC4D, and IC20=60D8

or

HB D/E/F000 2-8
IC14=5E1B, IC17=EB8D, and IC20=B4C6

or

HB 7/9 R3
IC14=5F1A, IC17=????, and IC20=B2C8

Hi Eric,

Do you have the ability to read these and compare the checksums? I don't
think we did with that game. The White Label Eproms I'm talking about
above all had the original -0/1/2 over-written with a 7/8/9
respectively. So, I suspect that means they are a later version of the
code. What is curious is the checksums were changed. Perhaps this was
done as these may have been experimental and they wanted an easy way to
find out which version was present.

I have a complete set of the -7/8/9 factory labelled chips that I would
sell for $60 plus postage if anyon is interested. I have no idea if
these are good or bad for your machine, nor what the modifications are.
Could be game pricing or anything. Someone would have to disassemble the
code to find out.

I have not found any notes relating to Hyperball yet in the documents I
have retrieved from the distributor (Dale Distributing). Dale himself
died a few years ago as has Brad Weiss who was the service manager and
might have known what these were. Pity I hadn't found these a few years
ago when both were still alive!

I believe L-5 and L-6 are not 'factory' releases, but modified versions.
The name Jess Askey comes to mind, for some reason.

I've sent a set off to be tested by someone with the game. Once I know
they are valid then I shall release them into the wild...exactly how
I'll determine later. Once released - either as the factory Eproms or
code there is no way to recall it, and I have no intention of releasing
unknown code that may make things worse for Hyperball owners!

I'll also ask Jess if he knows anything about these ones of mine...

Yes Jess, made these versions, he added high score saving, but his L-5 version had a bug if the ram got scrambled the game wouldn't boot, he fixed it in L-6.

"I have updated my old Hyperball L-5 ROM that allows your Hyperball game to save the high scores upon restart instead of resetting it everytime. The L-5 Version had a flaw that caused the game to stay in the diagnostics mode by not putting the correct checksum into the battery backed RAM. If you ever replaced your batteries under L-5, you would need to replace the IC20 ROM with a factory L-4 ROM to initialize the RAM with correctly checksummed data and then put the L-5 ROM in to continue. In short, this was a problem (thanks to Dave Langley for finding this). The new L-6 takes care of this problem, I highly suggest upgrading to it. It is downloadable here... http://level7.askey.org."
