Hey guys, i have an issue with my Data East Jurassic Park. the start-
up music won't play during the T-REX diagnostics tests. if i pull the
battery out and power cycle the game it will play the sounds. Then if
i put the battery in without changing any adjustments or adding
credits and cycle the game the sound won't play. I've flashed and re-
burned all 3 sound board ROMS. I haven't replaced the RAM chip on the
sound board. I don't see any check-sum errors upon boot up.

If i start a game the sound will randomly start playing dinosaur roar
noises. If i start another mode the sound might correct it self but
most times it won't. If i power cycle from this state (with batteries
installed) the game will boot starting with a T-REX roar then silence.
After all diagnostic testing i can hit the start button and then i get
the background sound and voice sounds just fine until it messes up
about half way into a game.

Any thoughts?

Yes Curt, it would seem that perhaps the ribbon cable should be reset
between the CPU and the Sound board. If that doesn't do it I would
perform a continuity test on the cable. Since you are wearing out
your battery box located on the CPU and it seems that the CPU signals
are not being sent, are confused, or perhaps not being received by the
sound board it tends to point to the ribbon cable or perhaps the CPU
itself. The sound PIA 6821 on the CPU could be faulty.

Thanks for the advice Barry, I'll grab a ribbon cable from my friends
Gun N Roses to see if that's the issue. I'll report back soon. I've
reseated the ribbon cable a few times but it didn't help.

The startup music not playing is by design. The music only plays
during the T-Rex diagnostic when the coin door is open (maybe to allow
ops to adjust the volume?) With the coin door closed, when you start
the machine you're supposed to just get a roar followed by silence
during the test.

The random dinosaurs roaring during playing is less likely a sound
board/ribbon cable issue, more likely a switch issue. The dinosaur
stand-up targets get beat up pretty bad and mis-adjust themselves on
this game... you've probably got a stuck dinosaur switch. Go to all
of them and test them with your finger in switch test mode, if any are
stuck or it looks like the plastic switch isn't clearing the metal
behind it, loosen the switch assembly, adjust, and tighten.

Great game - enjoy!

Great call on the coin door, i was having problems getting into the
adjustments menu. I had repaired the molex connector that goes into
the MPU board. so that is what caused my no sound "issue" at boot up.
I put the new ribbon cable in and i'm still having the issue with the
sounds freaking out. I tried every switch on the game and i can't find
any faults. i tapped the playfield to make sure that i didn't have any
touchy switches. I ordered 2 new PIA chips but they won't be in for a
while with the holidays just around the bend. I tried to start almost
every computer room modes and started the final system shutdown. To no
avail the sound wouldn't mess up. started my second game and about 2
balls in the sound started freaking out. I recorded the sounds to
share with the group to see if anyone has heard this combo of sounds.
The mp3 file starts off with the error, power cycle, then the start of
my third game. I played way past the end of the sound file. I couldn't
get it to mess up again which makes this problem all the more
frustrating. Anything else that i can check until the PIA chips comes
in?

Finally figured it out! The sound board, and only the sound board was "rebooting". Either the 12V or 5V line was dropping low when all flipper are hit at the same time. Put in a Rottendog replacement power supply last night, and everything is working great now!

Thanks for the info. I had a similar problem and you led me right to the source of the issue. Thanks again!

Had a similar issue with my TFTC. I floated the sound board to reduce the hum, but noticed the music/sound became intermittent during game play....I realized that pin 12 on CN1 of the power supply board (a new board) was burnt (likely one of the reasons why the pin came with a new PS board)...when i floated the sound board - it no longer had a good ground (CN1, pin 12 is the 12v ground for the PS board) and the board was resetting in effect - I repinned the connector and the problem went away......
