Thoughts on Stargate

I've had my Stargate for several days now (Thanks again Joel!) and my
overall thought is this is a great game that will I be hanging on to
for awhile. One thing that I wish was different is I wish there was a
shot that actually lit the pyramid to start a mode. Right now it
seems to easy to start a mode and rip through to "Eye of Ra" mode.
One time during one of the two ball modes, I was draining a ball
almost at the same time a ball was going into the pyramid. The next
mode started instantly without any time between modes.

Also, I see Sandstorm referred to as a wizard mode - I don't see how
that can qualify as a wizard mode. Especially since it can be
purchased with 16 quartz. Maybe someone can explain this to me. It's
a cool mode though, don't get me wrong.

I did get the Stargate (all tasks completed) wizard mode this
morning. So the game is rather deep, but not overly difficult - which
is the way I like it. For me, the biggest challenge of the game has
been getting more than 2 combos. I do not try going for the skill
shot. I would rather have the ball be fed to the upper flipper to try
and get the left ramp (to set up the combo), since there does not seem
to be any other shots that directly feed the ball to this flipper.
Making both ramps, one right after the other, is difficult at best.

I don't know if it's just me or my game, but sometimes a white pyramid
shot is flashing, and a little bit later it is solid white (and
another shot is flashing), but I never made the shot. Also, the
tutorial talk doesn't seem to bother me that much. I tried hold the
flippers for several seconds launching a ball and that didn't do
anything. It could be because I am in tournament mode, which I need
to be to have the machine on "Free Play".

Anyways, I rambling, but IMHO this is a well design game with some
pretty cool rules and shots. If you haven't played it, hunt one down
and give it a shot.

I was looking at thinking of buying one a few months back (it got
sold). I think I may end up getting one someday as it looks to be an
excellent game. Glad to hear the positives of this game.

There are 3 wizard modes. I havn't seen anyone say that Sandstorm was
a wizard mode. It's kind of a special mode that you can go into with
either 5 transporters or buy it with enough quartz. you can in fact
save up enough quartz to buy a wizard mode like "the Gate" if you save
up enough. But that was like 50 or 60 quartz. If you buy a lot of
stuff often, better prizes come up to offer.

You get one wizard mode by completing your physical objectives.

you get another by completing your modes and starting the eye of ra

you get the third by doing both of those in the same game.

BTW, Stargate has the best rules in ANY pinball machine. So much
complexity and ways you can play it, to rack up great scores. Lots of
options available. Nobody plays stargate the same way. Just an
awesome game.

From ipdb.org:

3 Wizard modes (Eye Of Ra, Stargate, and Sandstorm)

Cool, so there is a wizard mode for getting the other two in one
game. I have to admit the first time I played this game on location,
I didn't care much for it. I went in with a bias against Gottlieb
games just on reputation and was determined to not like it. After
hearing Neo and others praising this game, I took a closer look at the
rules and played it again and found out how fun it is. I love the
kicker targets all over the playfield - it really gets the ball
flying. Like Neo said, there are different ways of playing the game -
I usually don't know until I'm into a game, how I'm going to play
it.

There isn't another wizard mode for playing Stargate and Eye of Ra in
the same game I don't believe, Sandstorm is the 3rd wizard mode
(although I'm not sure if it technically qualifies for one, it does
take 10 shots at a minimum to achieve). Ironically, though it seems
easy to obtain, I get that one the least. Part of the challenge with
Stargate is that the wizard modes alone don't lead to a high score,
it's the incrementing of the jackpot in combination of the wizard
modes that lead to super high scores. You can also rack up some major
points in some of the modes, esp. the one where you shoot the two
guards--get that up to 100 mil. a shot and your score can skyrocket
very quickly. For the combo shots, it goes like 5, 10, 20, 30 million
I think. So once you get good at it, you can get points that way as
well. Like Neo, I love the game, my favorite. Not the best sound,
not the best dmd, but everything about the shots and rules is
outstanding, and I really like the theme. The quartz is a great part
of the game, it's like a 'stargate currency', do you use it to light
the extra ball or wait for a couple more to try and double the
jackpot? 25 is the limit on quartz by the way, anything over that
only awards you the super jackpot. Congrats on your purchase!

Have you read the 7 pages of instructions in the manual?( even though
you need to devise a flow chart to follow it).

IIRC, you have to get all the multi ball modes AND complete the combo
to get the final wizard mode. I always found the combo the hardest to
get, because you need to get, in order, left ramp, right ramp, left
Horus, right (Horus or Sarcofagus, i forget). And you cant hit
anything else in the execution of this combo, or it won't count.

Have you completed the combo yet?

I've only been able to complete a two shot combo. The pressure of
hitting the left ramp and then that ramp right - one right after the
other - is usually too much for me to do anything else. I think the
pyramid is also in the combo shots (the last shot?). I've complete
all modes to get "Eye of Ra" and all tasks to get the Stargate "wizard
mode" - which only requires a 2-shot combo to complete the "combo
task". I purchased "Sandstorm" with 16 quartz - and it was a cool
mode, but I don't see where that is a wizard mode. It's just a normal
mode that comes up as a transporter award or purchased with quartz.
I'll look at the manual again tonight, but I'm more confused now than
I was before on whether or not there is a "true" third wizard mode.

Again, great game. None of the shots are gimmes (for me) and those
kicker targets are there so that if you do miss a shot, the ball may
come flying back at you. Hitting the drops in the correct order (with
the timers) is a fun challenge also.

???? hummm, I would have assumed that the 3rd would have been getting
the gate and modes. (never done it yet). I've done the full combo a
couple of times. What's nice is that it doesn't time you out. So you
can just grab the ball and take your time with each shot, as the game
puts the ball on the side you need for the next shot. There is so
much to this game. I was just playing it and bought a wizard mode for
20 quartz.

I just have to brag. I finally completed a 5-shot combo - my heart
was racing more than ever, but I was able to keep it together and pull
each shot off. I was hoping for a little more fanfare from the
machine, but oh well....

I've had it three different times now where I had only one segment and
one mode away from the two main wizard modes in the same game on ball
2 with an extra ball, only to screw it up and drain the remaining
balls quickly :(

Let me guess on the segment--Hurry up? I can complete the segments
pretty easily now except for that one--every time it just kills me.
However, if you can manage to get it three times in a game you get an
extra ball. I have achieved that.....once. :( You can also get an
extra ball from 30 combo shots, which is an easier one to achieve in
my opinion, I think I've gotten that one multiple times.

Bingo! The Hurry-up gets me every time. The shots in this game don't
seem too bad until you actually need to have one. Also, I'm trying
to figure out if the "timer" (for the hurry up) keeps counting if you
hit the ball into the transporter, because it takes FOREVER for the
ball to be popped back up and fed to the left flipper to try the hurry
up. The dmd graphics seem to go in slow motion :) I don't think I've
ever had such an addictive game before. It's still early, but this
game is awesome!

Try holding the flippers whenever you have a ball going to any of the
kick out areas such as the Transporter. The trapped ball will be shot
right away, and any DMD sequence as part of your award (ie again
Transporter) will be skipped.

ball to be popped back up and fed to the left flipper to try the hurry

Transporter) will be skipped.- Hide quoted text -

Thanks for the tip, Nick! I'm surprised I haven't figured that one
out yet. I've tried hitting the flippers at the end of the ball to
speed thru the bonus....that doesn't work.

And yes Neo, I have crossed over :)

There isn't another wizard mode for playing Stargate and Eye of Ra in
the same game I don't believe,
Hmmm...may have to play a game with the glass off :)
Tom
Have you read the 7 pages of instructions in the manual?( even though
you need to devise a flow chart to follow it).
IIRC, you have to get all the multi ball modes AND complete the combo
to get the final wizard mode. I always found the combo the hardest to
get, because you need to get, in order, left ramp, right ramp, left
Horus, right (Horus or Sarcofagus, i forget). And you cant hit
anything else in the execution of this combo, or it won't count.
Have you completed the combo yet?
Joel
I've only been able to complete a two shot combo. The pressure of
hitting the left ramp and then that ramp right - one right after the
other - is usually too much for me to do anything else.
2 with an extra ball, only to screw it up and drain the remaining
balls quickly :(
Tom

Same holds true for the skill shot award. If the flippers are held the
DMD sequence is skipped and the second ball is served quickly.

AUGH!!!!!

I think this might be it for a while... I've been reading way too much

I was doing my best to not blow up at the number of posts by guys
whining that their pristine cabinet had a piece of lint on it three
years ago so they had to send it off for a complete re-decal, but not
just any decals, only the ones that were reproduced in an orbital
vacuum tube by the formerly cryogenically frozen guru of pinball who
has actually travelled back in time with priceless information on
clearcoating that he only shares with the northsoutherneasternwestern
pinball enthusiasts that live in the optimal temperate zone.

I was also trying to *not* blow up at the next lemming that can't seem
to play any pinball machine unless someone else already likes it and
says "It's Cool!" Because, Lawlor-forbid, it might be a Data East or
Gottleib... Or-- now, everyone-- hold onto your butts-- a Chicago

I'm going to stop before I see one more post by a supposedly "grown"
man whining that a) wife/girlfriend/domestic partner will be mad if he
spends another $1.20 on a shiny ball bearing or piece of screen
printed lexan... b) some jerk has an eBay ad listed that doesn't meet
his specific criteria, or c) a craigslist ad of an inexpensively
priced machine that he missed out on even though he has no intention
of ever playing it. Just storing it, maybe toying with it, until he
sells it as a "project" game 6 months later for $200 more than he
bought it for. That would be *after* complaining about trying to buy
parts from Steve Young.

Let me try something here:

The new coolest thing is the pinball "hybrid". Import a container from
South America-- hopefully every machine has been at a seaside resort
and never serviced (if I read one more post that says "needs shopped"
I may just personally tattoo the url for Merriam-Webster to the
poster's forearm). So, this pinball "hybrid"... It comes with a pre-
installed remote battery holder. In fact, the battery holder is so
remote that it might even be in the next container on the ship. No
worries about acid damage, of course.

Now, this hybrid machine can take many forms-- it could have the head
of a 90s Bally and the body of a 60s Gottleib. It's the luck of the
draw, really. But, your super-rare-ultra-valuable-priceless-numberONE-
killer-everyonewillbejealous hybrid is the rare pin2K head with SWE1

would like to own more in the future. Heck, I've even owned a Chicago

Tom,

Nothing personal and I apologize for what came across as insulting.
Thing is, I try out any pinball machine and don't let what other
people say about it influence my decision as to whether I like a game
or not.

If I did, RC*T would have one less person standing up in its corner
and I'd be pointing and laughing at anyone that *did* stand up for it.
And I'd pretend to enjoy playing LOTR.

Apparently my "hybrid" bandwagon didn't get any passengers so now I'll

I like your instruction card. Good work.

As for Hybred pinballs. I have one pinball machine that gets over
100MPG and runs off of hydrogen.

Stargate is great value for the money. And don't let the price trick
you, into thinking it's a lower end title. It blows away nearly every
3K+ title i've played. Nearly. Only 2 titles that demand more than
3k on a regular basis, surpass it. But the best bang for your buck
has to be DE JP.

I've had this conversation with Neo and others before...

Premier era Gottliebs for the most part really aren't that bad. What
they are though is so completely different than the other games of the
same era that they take some serious getting used to. I think that
when the designers at Gottlieb were designing their games, they
specifically did weird stuff with them to try to make them stand out
like the overly linear stop and go nature of Street Fighter II, or the
large round outholes unusually close to the slings and / or flippers
on many of their titles.

For the most part, as a single game in a collection a Gottlieb is a
bad choice (with the possible exception of Stargate) because their
uniqueness is not what most people remember from the arcades. Most
people remember Bally/Williams titles or the DE games that definitely
took their cues from Bally/Williams. That isn't to say that those
games aren't good -- I own and always will more B/W and DE games than
Gottlieb titles, but it makes the Gottlieb titles stand out.

After last year's MGC, when I had about 15 games set up in my garage,
one of them was Street Fighter II. I found it very interesting that
while I didn't necessarily like the game that much, I played it more
than I think anything else that I had set up in the garage while it
was out there. The other 14 or so games were more similar in style.

If you get have a larger collection, take a chance on a "stinker" like
SF2. If you don't like it, you can always get rid of it... but you
might find the difference to be refreshing. I know I do!

"Bugs' BB Party Like a Rockstar" is actually really fun!

I'm singing your affordability praises! I may have bought *ONE* NIB
game, but I saved for *months* (okay, close to a year in
*anticipation* of the game.) So, uh, I even cover the beautiful thing
to minimize dust. I'm fairly sure I will be buried in it. My friends--
pinball pals and non-pinball pals-- have been advised.

I also own a couple of DE games... And everytime I think I want to
sell Secret Service I play it-- not so much wanting to sell it
anymore.

The only WMS game I have is the game that hooked me 18 years ago. Taxi

Another time, maybe I'll bore you with my affection for EMs...

Tom
Stargate is a great game. It's very underrated, but that is good for
us who like it because it isn't huge $$$. I still kick myself for not
buying that populated NOS playfield from PBR a few years ago.

Anyways, I rambling, but IMHO this is a well design game with some
pretty cool rules and shots. If you haven't played it, hunt one down
and give it a shot.
I had one, it was in very nice shape, and I sold it to a couple that
was very excited to get it.

Beautiful game, the most polished Gottlieb DMD by far. I'd say it
tosses a lot of Williams games out on their ears.

What finally killed it for me was the non-stop tutorial speech (and
yes I knew about holding in the flippers) and the playfield layout.
The layout suited itself well for single ball play, or trap and shoot
play, but did not have a good flow for the constant multiballs.
Generally, all the balls would slam together in the middle of the PF
and then drain SDTM. I've had this problem on every Stargate I've
played, so it wasn't just this machine. People that play more
methodically may have more luck with it.

to be to have the machine on "Free Play".
Can anybody answer this question? Is it not possible to disable the
tutorial speech while in tournament mode?

It does not disable the tutorial speach, but does reduce how often you
hear it. I have mine on free play and it functions this way.

On mine, I don't notice much of a difference at all when trying to
reduce it.

you have to hold in the flipper button while the ball is served in the
shooter lane. Hold it in until the music changes. Then the speech is
cut down drastically. To about 80% less.

Your right. I just checked it and it did reduce the speech. I guess I
never held the flipper button long enough.

Thanks Neo

Hmm...I've held the buttons pretty long - but I will try it again
tonight and see if that works. Funny thing is, the tutorial speech
doesn't bother me much when I'm actually playing, but if someone else
is playing, I notice it alot more.

Thanks,

I know I've done it on your game. Not sure if it was in tourny mode
or not.

Just like they said. When the ball is ready to be launched, hold both
flippers about two seconds. The music will change. Cuts down on talk a
great deal.
