Were the Bally 7-segment 6- and 7-digit neon displays made by Bally,
or were they a standard off-the-shelf component? If so, does anyone
know who made them, and what is their generic parts number?

I've seen a replacement LCD display that looks quite interesting at
http://www.pinball4you.ch/okaegi/pro_led.html though I would have
thought this could be simplified even further.

Anyone know whether drop-in replacement are available for sale
anywhere?

Thanks to everyone for their help. It was pointed out that Babock now
make replacement 6 and 7 Segment Alphanumeric/Numeric, or 0.7" (17.8
mm), 7-digit, Gas-Plasma Display. Apparently they replace those by:

Backock Part Number: DI07700 (7-digit)
* BECKMAN: SP-493 / SP-494
* CHERRY: W07-1007
* DISPLAY'S INC: AR07700

Backock Part Number: DI06701 (6-digit)
* BECKMAN: SP-491 / SP-492
* CHERRY: W06-1W70
* DISPLAY'S INC: AR06701

More details on the Backcock Web site at
http://www.babcockinc.com/babcock/documents/doc_523.html

I wish Displays Inc. was still in business. (or did someone start up
the company again?) They made the best ones, and had the lowest prices.

The glass part is generic, several manufacturers made them. The display
(board+glass) is a Bally part. You can get replacement glasses from the
usual pinball parts supplying places.
