I always preferred the old website over this one. Why do they always mess with stuff.

Google is on the internet, a website where most people access the newsgroup. Their website, they don't make money on newgroups. Lucky they host it and it's archives. So they can do what ever they want. Like it or not.

Rec Games Pinball is on usenet, where you need a news reader to access it. Usenet doesn't archive it.

Might not be the best solutions. I'm just pointing out the nature of the beast.

I think you get the gist of it. Well.... maybe not.
2) It's not run by google.
You're right.... it's only one of the googlegroups, why should I think it could 'possibly' be affiliated with google?

Well, it is not run by Google nor affiliated with Google. Google just
calls it Google Groups. They access this usenet group for you. That
makes one think it is run by Google. It is not.

The group is rec.games.pinball

What Lloyd said in his note is accurate.

You can access it without using Google at all. I access it through an
organization called Eternal September. It is free (which is amazing).
Do a Duck Duck Go search (I avoid Google) then you can find it and sign up.

You will get a username and password in order to access Eternal
September through Thunderbird.

Then you will need a newsgroup reader. They are not as common anymore.
I use Thunderbird. It is an Email program that still retains the
newsgroup access.

Setting it up requires a certain geekyness.

I use Giganews for my Usenet access - it archives about ten years of
Usenet postings, unlike Google which has usnet archive back to the
beginning.

I too use Thunderbird to access Giganews (costs around $9/month) and
they don't screw around with the interface so it is transparent in usage.

I think some 'good' can still come from this thread.

First, let me say... I'm not exactly the 'whiz kid' on computers.

Buy more relevant to this post.... I also don't like and resist change, I'll have to own it... and I will.

When I posted this... I was using Internet Explorer. So, anybody going to this (whatever you call it) don't make the mistake of using Internet Explorer like I did. Well, If you do... at least you'll see 'why' I posted this in the first place. It's pretty funky, now that you can't switch back to the old format.

Incidentally, I'm still using Windows 7. I know eventually I'll be forced to switch over to whatever Microsoft is prompting me to do. But I'm an old dog and don't care to learn new tricks. Most of those old adages you hear are true.

I am a Mac user, but still deal with Windows. I like Windows 7 - well I
tolerate it. Microsoft had a free upgrade to Windows 10, but that time
period is over. It is still possible to upgrade for free, but pretty geeky.

I run both W7 and W10 on my Mac. I prefer 7.

Even Microsoft said goodbye to IE. It is a pain to switch, but Firefox
is a great alternative. Chrome is too much Google spyware.

Actually the free upgrade still exists and works. I have updated over
100 PCs easy.

If your PC is stable and you have a good connection, you can goto
Windows site and click the upgrade now button. As with any major
upgrade, backup your stuff first. I had 2 fail where I ended up just
reinstalling from scratch.

Also, I hope on that Windows 7 machine you using, you are not doing
anything like banking or taxes or anything personal. Security is a
massive issue and without them releasing security updates any longer,
you are leaving yourself open to many exploits as they are found on
probably a daily basis.

Thanks Paul for posting that. I run Windows using VMWare Fusion on my
Mac. I upgraded to Win10 after the free period following a procedure,
likely the one you posted.

I only use Windows to run EPROM burner Minipro and PinSoundStudio. And
recently, I have been able to get both of these to run under WINE
(although I have had trouble getting WINE to connect to the burner via USB).

I know a fair number of people who have stuck with Win7 because they
disliked 8 and distrust 10. Your point is well taken.

Its free, no monthly access fee and I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my news

Could use some updates, but I created this PinWiki article on how to
access rec.games.pinball quite a while back.

https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Rec.games.pinball_Access_Methods

I've been using Thunderbird for both email and USENET (via
eternal-september) for many years now.

I have nothing to add. I just wanted to say that it's great to see that you are still active, Kerry. I hope all is well with you!
