Discussion:
CAN YOU USE A TIP102 INSTEAD OF A TIP122?

I dont know for sure but I would not try using something that was not
made for the machine.

The TIP102 has a higher current rating but is otherwise nearly
identical, so it should be a fine substiitute for a TIP122.

Yes you can. The Tip122 is a more robust tranistor however.

What Bill said. A TIP102 is the accepted (and better) replacement for a TIP122.

Yes, Walt. It's stronger than the tip122 so if you have a solenoid
shorted it may cause more damage to your board but if everything is
otherwise healthy it's a fine sub.

In my opinion you can burn a nice hole in the board using either one. If a TIP122
or TIP102 fails it usally develops an internal short. If the pin is overfused the
driver or CPU turns into unrepairable toast in no time. I would always use the
TIP102 because chance is higher that it isn't damaged when the fuse blows. The
TIP122 simply isn't strong enough.

Yes, you can. Only difference really is that the TIP102 is higher current.
So if you have a short where the fuse doesn't blow and the transistor has
to, the TIP102 will hold out longer than a TIP122, so you run the risk of
fire or burning up the transistor/board if this is the case. Or you'll get
a big cherry bomb"bang" out of the 102 (I speak from experience). This is
only if your fuse doesn't blow and you have a short at a coil (extreme case)
but in short (no pun intended)- yes- you can get away with a TIP102 as
replacement.

I believe the NTE replacment part for both parts is the same part.
Possibly not, but NTE generally will do this. Check the NTE
crossreferences for both parts and see.
