For those of you who don't visit sPinside, you may be interested in the following thread which announces licensed software updates for Bally/Williams games:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/official-williams-and-bally-software-upgrades

The first four titles announced are Creature, Junk Yard, Radical, and Road Show. The upgrades are available as pre-burned ROMs (to ensure the person who is doing the work gets some compensation); Planetary Pinball is one supplier. The price for the ROM is very reasonable: less than $20 for Creature.

Whitewater could use an update. Can they update sounds/music?

Thanks for this, Tony.

I wonder if there is any chance of them modifying early WPC pins to
include 'ball save' or 'minimum play time'. That would help the less
skilled like myself in those pins.

Reach out to the author (Soren? on sPinside) and see; they seemed to be receptive to
suggestions. From a software point of view I can't see why they couldn't add those
types of features; they aren't planning wholesale re-writes of code, adding new modes,
etc., but the ball save seems very reasonable. Keep in mind their license with B&W
requires the new software to be free play only, if that's an issue for you.

Thanks Tony.

Soren commented that he thought that FH is 'perfect'. I know nothing
that is perfect, but it seems unlikely he is willing to make the
investment in adding free play.

A lot of focus on IJ bugs.

Still, pretty cool that this is going on.

As Scott replied, this mod is 'blessed' by Williams through PPS as long
as certain requirements are met. PPS has apparently designated Soren as
qualified to do the work. Apparently these will be 'commercial' updates
that will be fully functional for coin op.

I stand corrected. There was a response that could be interpreted either "yes, coin op available" or "no, coin op not available", and I read it as the latter. A subsequent posting does seem to indicate coin op play will be available. I'll check when I receive my CFTBL ROM and post here if that's not the case.

Thanks,
Tony

Thanks Tony. Nice of you to be a Guinea pig. :-)

I am looking forward to an update to one of the pins I own.

There is already a menu setting for this.
It's called "Balls per Game"

Eh, not quite.

I got sort of beat up asking for the minimum ball play change in
Pinside. While I like having it, especially when, someday, I might have
people over to play, again. But especially at the pinball museum where
I volunteer.

There are a lot of casual players that are quickly turned off by a lost
ball. They tend to walk away from those games. While setting one of
those pins to 5 ball might make the casual player happy, the more
accomplished would go nuts playing that many balls on a more modern pin.

The nice thing about the minimum ball play is that it helps the casual
player, while not driving others nuts. I believe they do turn that off
for a tournament.

They leave 5 ball on the EMs. But all SS are set to 3, which I think is
reasonable.

I wish they would incorporate the "pause" feature as found on the Home
version of TZ. That is such a handy feature.
