Hey guys, quick question on a 5116 chip. While trying to fix the factory
settings on a Big Guns ( I've put in a new battery holder and batteries
& checked diode D2 with virtually no voltage at each point), I'm to the
6116 ram chip. Can I put in a 5116 ram chip in its place? Seems the last
thing to try on this problem. Thanks again for any info! Greg

The dip version is pin compatible, and has the same Vcc voltage.
It might work, but I would be concerned about the access time.
The 5116 is only good to 100nS.

Huh? Are you trying to say that a System 11 is trying to access
RAM at faster than 100ns? I don' think so....

The NEC 5116 is a low-power CMOS 2K SRAM with the
standard JEDEC pinout. You shouldn't have any trouble
replacing a 6116 with one. I bought several tubes of 5116
and I use them to replace all varieties of 2K SRAM I encounter
on pins and vids. Haven't run into any problems yet.

Awesome guys, I'll give her a try today to see if that factory sttings
goes away. Thanks again! Greg

Damn-that didn't fix the problem. That's another post and thanks guy for the input! Greg

Not saying that at all.

Since I don't own one, and have never worked on one, I have no idea what
sort of board might be in his game, therefore the disclaimer about speed.

I can read an IC spec sheet, and the 6116 is faster, that's all.

You shouldn't assume that the chip he's trying to replace is the fastest 6116 ever made....
we're talking about pinball machines from the 80's. ;-)
I know a 70ns version exists, but I've never seen one used on a pin or vid.
I've only ever found 200, 150, and 120ns parts on boards (and some newer vids with 100ns).
100ns is very fast for that vintage game.

It is actually possible to run into problems when using RAM that is TOO fast (usually due
to poor board design). I've encountered problems when using 45ns parts on some boards.
You can get SRAM now that has access times as low as 25ns! Maybe even faster....

Matt

P.S. The 5116 I have are made by Sharp, not NEC (as I incorrectly stated before).

Yep - they do go faster.
We used to use parts in one of our designs that had 8nS access times... and
even that was too slow! We had to throttle back the top speed of our board
due to the slow 8nS SRAM's.
