Alright so here's where it stands... I replaced 8 capacitors today
that were all dead and the speakers are soudning LOUDLY today; they
probably would work great. It was a relief at first... However I
only hear the initial DONG at the boot up and even adjusting the
speaker volume has no effect (though it used to). I dont know why I
have no sound and this has been going on for a long while now. I have
replaced chips U7 and U8 recently too which did not help. I think
chip U2 is damaged. I also replaced U1 transistor recently as well
though the original didnt seem bad. The 2nd one I used was burnt to a
crisp though.

Do I have a bad connection? Wires in wrong? Suggestions? The rom
chip is ok too; tested on friends addams family.

Have you been replacing parts with cause to think they are bad, or
just "shot gunning" for a fix?
8 dead capacitors??
No offense, but by your description it seems you may have caused
additional issues with your repair work.
Iy might be time, and maybe too late, to contact Clive, Borygard, or
other pro repair services, to see if they will give your board a look.

Well if it's going to cost more than $50 I may as well just buy a new
board for $200 (which I'm close to doing at this point) and just ditch
the old one. Anyone else know what could eliminate the sound
entirely? Speakers seem to be working well; I suspect a faulty U2
chip or resistor/diode problem.

Start with the easy stuff first. Make sure you reseat all of the
ribbon cables and check all connectors to make sure they are plugged
in.

The speakers are wired in series. If a speaker wire comes off, or is
broken, there will be absolutely no sound.

I have placed the sound board in a different Addams Family and it does
not work. The speakers are definitely alive and well for certain; I
have some strange unknown problem. It cant be the eprom. Anyone
else? Am about to just pony up and buy a new audio board if no one
else has any insight...

Have you checked for broken traces on the board? Cold solder joints?

Hrm now we might be getting somewhere... I booted it up several times
and the speakers are extremely loud & crisp and "popping" a lot;
almost frightening :/ However only the second time I booted up I got
the -dong- sound SEVEN times. I've read the sound system will -dong-
several times if there is an error. It has not donged at all once
(which it used to) ever since the 7 dongs from when I booted up the
machine (yes it was 7).

Any further ideas?

7 Bongs on a Pre-DCS sound board (as used in TAF) doesn't make sense.

I've not researched Clay's guide for these kind of problems, but what
I typically do is work backwards, from the amp, to see if the right
kind of signal(s) is(are) present. You need a scope and a logic probe
to make troubleshooting easy. I suppose you could use a DMM, but I
think that would be pretty tough. You have to isolate the problem to
either the analog side or the digital side of the board. I know this
isn't much help...all I'm suggesting is a disciplined approach.

You may be able to trade your board in toward a new one.
If you decide to just get rid of it...LMK. I'd like a challenge.

Yea I'd be fine with that if I have to go that route in the coming 10
days and have to buy a new board.

I dont have a solution yet but I did find something disturbing... One
of the two legs for the X1 Crystal on the audio board broke off. I
barely moved it and the other leg came out too. The broken leg is
incredibly short so I cant re solder the X1 crystal back in. I hope
this replacement can be found and more importantly I wonder if this
was the problem?
