Yet another question about updating Stern code w/ thumb drive

Ok.. I've seen a gazillion posts on people updating their codes, but
I'm still confused on what thumb drive to get.

Can't I just go to Best Buy and buy a 1gb drive? I see some people
have had trouble with larger drives, or do I HAVE TO purchase a 128mb
drive?? The manual is a bit confusing. One part states up to a 128,
and another part of the manual says at least a 128mb.. I'm so
confused!! My SM is on version 1.3 at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

You should be okay on SM. POTC and before have older boot ROMs which you can
update. I've always used Lexar and have had success with them. Just go to
Best Buy and get a 1gb. LTG :)

Thanks again.. I got the 1gb drive and it worked great.

One more question:

I got my Doc Ock working pretty good now. The lower micro switch
needed adjusting. Anyway, I noticed white grease on the Doc Ock rails
to help it move up & down. But I think the grease was hurting more
than helping. After I cleaned it off it moves much freer than before.
Is the white grease the proper lube for this or is it better dry? I
know metal on metal isn't good but is their a better lube that can be
used so it doesn't gum up?

Looks like white grease on mine. Grease attracts dirt and gets old, cleaning
and new grease would be a good idea. LTG :)

Likely, it's the version of FAT supported by S.A.M. that makes the
difference. I believe the first version supported FAT12 (aka FAT)
which supported a max volume size of only 32MB. FAT16 supports up to
2GB which is not to say that a 2GB USB drive is formatted out of the
box with FAT16. A long time ago, FAT32 became the standard and though
there is an identifier (by partition) to allow code to mount any
version of the file system, this is a rudimentary facility and Stern
likely just wanted to get it off the ground in the first version of
the hardware/OS.

The newer version of SAM supports all but popping an IC out of one
board to temporarily install it just to upgrade code is harrowing for
some.

I'd like to see some documentation of the library of code, calls,
interrupt structures, etc. developed over the years at Stern. Any
chance this stuff is Open Source? Not that Stern has anything to
protect (ie. nobody would be stupid enough to assume that they could
compete for the enormous market out there?!)

Some thumb drives come with a pre-installed CD-like partition designed
to autorun and install a utility application for the user, like the U3
app on Cruzer thumb drives.
Perhaps the SAM system can't sort the files.
Cruzer's do have an application on them to remove this CD partition,
after which they're just seen as a single USB drive after the removal.

That's the drive I bought from Best Buy. I tried to copy the file over
with the software still on the thumb drive, but it wouldn't let me. I
had to plug the thumb drive in, wait for the software to load, and
tell it I want to use it as a storage device only. After that it let
me delete the files, and move my SM code update to the drive.

I use my PSP in USB mode w/ a 32mb memory stick! Works like a
charm. :)
