Discussion:
How do I test the "Test Points" on my power supply board?

Don't know how I became a "Pinball Guru" (upgrade from "Pinbal
Flipper") because my question is a total newbie kind.

Would like to know how to use my DMM for the 6 testing points that m
lovely hand model is pointing to on the Power Supply Board.

Thank you.

Voltages are normally measured relative to Common, often referred to as
Ground.

So if the game has a metal shield on the inside of the headboard that is
a good point for your Common/Ground reference for your black lead of
your voltmeter. I use a jumper wire with alligator clips to hold the
connection while I probe with the red lead.

You may want to join the pinball ninja webzine as
this type of thing is discussed often and shown in
video and picture format.

Where do I find this "Pinball Ninja Webzine" on RGP Archive for video
on Power Supply Board testing using a DMM?

Watch this. Good basic tutorial on using your DMM:

Then you will be able to check those test points on your board (an
more) Identify ground screw or ground braid in the backbox and use you
black lead there. Red lead to the test point being measured. Writ
down the measurement and then they can be posted here so folks ca
verify that the voltages are correct or identify any possible issues

Maybe I am missing something, but it would be a good idea to identify in
your post the game.

+5, +12VU, -12VU, and +12V are all within tolerable readings. +5 is the pickiest
of them all, so suggest you re-test that point with your meter set to VDC 20 to
get better resolution.

-100V = nothing -- check fuses.

+68 at 101... this will blow shit up / catch on fire. DO NOT PLUG IN. Talk to
Rottendog!

TheKorn,

Thank you for your reply. I removed the new bridge rectifier I ordere
that I thought was the problem, and resoldered the old Bridge rectifie
located in the backbox. Then, I retested the testing points on th
Power Supply Board. Unfortunately I got the same readings that you ar
warning me about; I'm thinking the "No Reading" is coming from a fus
that is supposed to be missing on the power supply board.

I don't think Rottendog deals with indiviguals and only distributors.
The Rottendog board in the photo why purchased by the previous owner o
my pinball. Can you suggest what might be the problem as to why abou
six of the coils are not working on my Secret Service pinball based o
the power supply board readings? Thank you.

Mmmm, maybe. Looking at Jim's schematics, the -110V test point isn't fused
individually. Hopefully this is a mistake on Jim's schematics, otherwise that's a
design fault (no fire protection!). Assuming the schematic is correct, unless
some part of the board is depopulated, you should be seeing voltage there.
I don't think Rottendog deals with indiviguals and only distributors.
I wouldn't make that assumption; Jim is usually fairly approachable. Have you
tried sending him an email?

The voltages that are missing / too high are for driving high voltage displays.
Let me guess -- the previous owner also replaced all the displays with LED
displays?

So no, your power supply readings would explain why your solenoids are out. Let
me guess, all six that are out are special solenoids?

Er... no, your power supply readings would NOT explain why your solenoids are out.
Still guessing they're labeled as special solenoids. ;)

Not sure what special solenoids means. The coils that don't wor
